WHAT IS ALUMAWOOD?
Alumawood is two materials meshed together to bring out the best of both worlds. Wood has an amazing look and feel to it but is prone to rotting. Aluminum can be a bit dull to look at yet is strong and durable. Alumawood combines aluminum and wood together to bring you the best Alumawood patio covers material you can find on the market right now. You have the beautiful look of wood without the vulnerabilities to things like sun damage, water damage, termites, or wood rot. With Alumawood, you can prevent your pergola or patio cover from peeling, painting, or having to replace some or all of your structure.
WHY SHOULD I HAVE A PROFESSIONAL INSTALLER?
In order for your new patio cover system to reach its full length of life, it is critical that the installation process is a success from day one. Designing and building a perfect Alumawood patio cover needs to be complete down to the last piece. Without the correct Alumawood pergola installation, you may end up seeing weaknesses in your setup much sooner than expected. Most customers tell us that it makes more sense to pay a really well-rounded, qualified Alumawood patio covers installer upfront to make sure the job is done correctly from day one. This ensures that you won’t need to shell out more money down the road or even worse, completely replace the entire system due to a poor initial installation.

Frequently Asked Questions
How heavy is the material?
Alumawood components are made of roll form aluminum and individual Alumawood pieces are typically very lightweight. Some items like 3” x 8” header beams are heavier to provide strength and support while items like 2” x 2” lattice tubes are very lightweight. Some items can be ordered in various gauges of aluminum to provide additional strength.
Steel inserts can be installed inside some Alumawood components to provide long-lasting durability and strength while adding to the weight of the project as a whole.
Can Alumawood products be installed as a patio extension?
Yes, Alumawood is often used to extend existing patio covers here in the Phoenix area. Many new homes include a small covered patio area over the door to the backyard but homeowners typically wish they had a larger covered area. Alumawood is a great option for extending the home’s existing patio area with either open lattice or solid roof installations. The flexibility of it allows Royal Covers to create a modern Alumawood patio cover like extension that meets the goals of the homeowner.
Can they cover longer spaces with Alumawood?
Yes there are many ways to cover longer spaces with Alumawood. Steel inserts can allow Alumawood to span over longer distances and can allow for installations with minimal or even no posts.
Are there different Alumawood shapes and colors available?
Yes, Alumawood projects can be designed to custom fit almost any area. All materials are custom ordered for each project and can be ordered in many different lengths and several different colors. Royal Covers can design a solution to best use Alumawood to create the entertainment or relaxation space you are looking for.
How much maintenance do Alumawood parts require?
Alumawood shade structures are easy to maintain but not completely maintenance free. Generally, normal rainfall is sufficient to keep its appearance clean. If cleaning is required, we recommend the following steps. Particular attention should be given to areas under eaves, porches, awnings, and other overhangs that have limited exposure to the natural cleansing effect of rainfall.
Moderate Dirt
An occasional washing with clear water using a garden hose and soft-bristled brush is recommended (a long-handled, car-washing brush is ideal for this purpose).
Heavier Dirt Accumulation
Wash in the manner indicated below, but use the following solution:
- ⅓ cup detergent (i.e. Tide)
- ⅔ cup trisodium phosphate powder (also known as T.S.P.)
- 1 gallon water
Mildew Accumulation
Although rare in Arizona, mildew can collect on surfaces of all types of patio covers & shade structures and is often evident on surfaces that have not been properly maintained. Normally, mildew will appear as black spots. Mildew is easy to remove by using the following cleaning solution:
- ⅓ cup detergent (i.e. Tide)
- ⅔ cup trisodium phosphate powder (also known as T.S.P.)
- 1 quart sodium hypochloride 5% solution (e.g. Clorox)
- 3 quarts water
Caulking Components
Use mineral spirits in reasonable amounts, apply directly to foreign substances. Rinse the area thoroughly with water immediately after cleaning.
How much does Alumawood patio cover cost?
Alumawood is considered to be comparable to traditional wooden patio cover setups. However, because of their longevity of the aluminum, you typically eliminate the need to replace, paint, or treat anything. Custom Alumawood patio cover allows you to both save time and money over the long haul.
Can you install supports?
Supports can be installed to support ceiling fans per specific engineering details, but engineering does not support anything installed on top of or hanging from Alumawood products.
What paint is used for them?
Amerimax (the manufacturer) uses a weather-resistant, anti-corrosive Aluma-Shield paint system with Teflon surface protector. It is the most durable paint system in the aluminum patio cover market. The paint system withstands the harshest conditions, including sun, rain, wind, and extreme temperatures.
Can Alumawood parts be repainted?
While we do not recommend it, you can repaint Alumawood parts; however, proper preparation is critical. Amerimax recommends consulting a professional paint store for repainting advice. Aluminium Shade Structures are coated with silicone polyester and cured in a paint line oven for a durable finish. Repainting will likely weather and fade quicker than factory paint.
Please know that repainting any part of your Alumawood pergola kits will void your warranty.
How to Identify Genuine Alumawood Products
Made with quality materials and attention to detail, Alumawood Shade Structures are one of the best in the aluminum patio cover market.
Each component of an Alumawood patio cover is manufactured from structural grade aluminum alloys and finished with our exclusive high performance coating system, Aluma-Shield with Teflon surface protector, which is backed by Amerimax’s Limited – Lifetime Warranty. Each patio cover system is designed to assemble with flawless fit and engineered for building code requirements throughout the United States. Every design and detail has been carefully considered to enhance the aesthetic appeal and the natural wood appearance.
Alumawood Shade Structures that were purchased after February 2004 will have “AMERIMAX ALUMAWOOD” stamped in black ink inside the 2′ x 6′ Rafters and 3′ x 8′ Headers (also known as Header Beams). Once the product is received, take off the end caps of the 2′ x 6′ Rafters or 3′ x 8′ Headers and look inside for the “AMERIMAX ALUMAWOOD” ink stamp.
If you can’t find the “AMERIMAX ALUMAWOOD” ink stamp (can be hard to see inside of the components) you can request verification from your materials provider.

Why Customers Love Alumawood Lattice Patio Covers
Many of our customers are choosing our Alumawood lattice patio covers (or Alumawood pergola covers) and falling in love with them. They are the perfect option for warm, sunny Arizona days when you want shade but don’t want to interrupt air flow.
Host a dinner or luncheon under your Alumawood lattice patio cover or kick back with a book in your Alumawood gazebo on a summer afternoon. You’ll soon see why our Alumawood structures are attracting rave reviews.
The most popular spacing between lattice slats or “tubes” is 1-inch, which provides as much shade as possible while still allowing breezes to flow through. Natural light? Yes! Refreshing air flow? Yes! Plenty of shade? Absolutely! In fact, our Alumawood lattice patio covers can reduce Arizona sun exposure by 50 to 80%.
Top this off with a full suite of customization options. You can choose from seven different colors for your Alumawood pergola/patio or gazebo. Then, select between four end cuts to complement the style of your home and yard: mitered, scalloped, beveled, and corbel. Choose single or double beams and post columns and add ceiling fans and lights with the help of an electrician.
Alumawood vs. Wood Patio Covers?
Alumawood patio and pergola covers are a revolution for outdoor structures. In the past, we’ve had wood as a primary construction material for these covers. Then came vinyl. While both had their benefits, they had significant drawbacks, too. Alumawood structures offer the best of both without the disadvantages.
Wood looks lovely and natural, and it can be customized. The trouble is that it’s high maintenance–especially in the punishing heat and oppressive sun of Arizona summers. And unless you maintain it, wood can wear down in a real hurry. What looked pristine at the beginning can soon fade into an unsightly, unkempt structure once the elements take their toll.
The UV light bleaches the wood and paint. That means more work for you as you spend your weekends and vacation days repainting your patio. Wood is also subject to cracking, peeling, warping, rotting, and insect damage.
Alumawood patio covers offer the rich texture of wood and many customization and color options, but they’re a cinch to maintain. That’s because they’re covered in Alumawood’s signature Teflon surface protector. It repels dust, dirt, oil, and stains and helps reduce corrosion from bright sun and pollution. This paint system represents a revolution for outdoor structures. It’s beautiful and natural-looking—and it stays that way with minimal effort.
Alumawood patio covers will not fade in the hot sun. They are insect-proof (including to termites) and resist water damage (no warping or rotting). You don’t need to repaint these covers, and a light rain is usually all it takes to keep your Alumawood pergola and patio cover looking as good as it did when you installed it years ago. If any dirt or debris persists, simply wash it away with a soft scrub brush.
Alumawood vs. Vinyl Patio Covers
Before Alumawood, homeowners disillusioned by the high maintenance of wood gravitated toward vinyl. While vinyl didn’t offer as many options for customization, it still offered some, and it promised less maintenance and more durability…sort of.
While it didn’t have to be repainted or stained and insects wouldn’t destroy it, vinyl still warped and cracked and took a beating in the sun and rain. And it didn’t look natural— even from the beginning. You can’t imitate that rich wood grain with vinyl, and vinyl patio covers often appeared cheap.
Alumawood pergola and patio covers presented the perfect answer for those wanting the low-maintenance perks of vinyl without the problems. Alumawood offers no-hassle upkeep, unparalleled longevity, and the kind of natural beauty you could never get with vinyl.
Alumawood Gazebos
Whether you’re looking for a cover for an attached patio or a freestanding structure like a gazebo, Alumawood is the perfect option. Alumawood gazebos will drive up your home value with their sleek, streamlined look and facilitate the perfect combination of sun, shade, and breeze.
Too many backyard structures go to waste in Arizona because they don’t work well with the weather. When your gazebo is too hot, too shady, or too sunny, you won’t use it enough to get your money’s worth. Lattice Alumawood gazebo covers facilitate the perfect Arizona haven year-round.
